Simple and Easy

Simple and easy sounds fine and dandy and obvious I expect? I'd say that's a good interpretation, but one that is more difficult than it appears when you consider the nuance. Consider what isn't simple, what isn't easy even if it's simple, or the opposite. For the younger or better informed amongst you, navigating 'the backrooms' might be a good scenario to think more deeply about.

  • A 30 year prison term is simple - enduring one is the very definition of hard (time).
  • The sudden death of a loved one is usually simple; someone's life ended - dealing with your grief (and perhaps the circumstances of the death) is most likely far from easy.
  • Getting in a car and driving it is easy enough (for the experienced at least) - navigating a four lane wide motorway, keeping to the speed limit, paying attention to the sat-nav, ignoring your phone buzzing and dealing with vocal passengers is far from simple.

All this is to say if something truly is 'simple and easy' embrace it fully and celebrate that low hanging, easy mode fruit - life is rarely so generous.
