Welcome

What you need to know to obtain, maintain and improve fitness and health, at a glance, with the research done for you. For those who need more, we've got all the detail you need to be sure our recommendations are evidence and/or research backed.

Lots of confusing, conflicting and incorrect information out there. The primary aim of the site is to help you understand more about how your body (and to a lesser extent, your mind) works so you are better able to look after it and enjoy the things that matter to you.

To that end we have created a number of useful guides...

Too Long; Didn't Reads (TL;DRs)

A collection of the some of the most important and pertinent information explored on this site, in bitesize form. The subjects covered reflect the most useful facts or potential lifestyle changes that provide the most 'bang for your buck'.

Food & Drink

Salt

If you are healthy and have normal blood pressure and kidney function - regardless of your diet - you probably have no need to limit your salt intake and in all likelihood don't have to worry about consuming too little either. Use Himalayan or Halite (rock) salt to avoid possible contaminates.

Measurements/Tests

Lipoprotein(a)

If you're interested in or concerned about your heart health (particularly as you age) and can afford it, I'd highly recommend getting a Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) blood test (this is different to a standard cholesterol blood test). This will reveal if you have Lp(a) levels that indicate a higher risk of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease (CHD) and thrombosis. If you find you are at higher risk you can then take appropriate action.

Supplements

Bromelain

Bromelain digestive enzyme supplements (derived from pineapple) can be effective in aiding the digestion of high protein meals or drinks for those who experience discomfort otherwise. Other digestive enzymes that break down protein (proteases) can also be found in supplement form, however, bromelain also has many additional potential health benefits.

Creatine

Creatine provides a small but noticeable strength, power and endurance increase during anaerobic exercise (such as resistance training) and may reduce fatigue and recovery time afterwards. Some research suggests it may also improve bone mineral density and be neuroprotective. It is safe to use by almost everyone on a daily basis.

Teeth

Mouth Wash/Rinse

Because of the risks of tooth decay, staining, irritation and possible hypertension you should avoid mouth wash/rinse unless advised to use it by a dental professional and then only for a brief period. Mouth washes/rinses containing alcohol also expose you to the risk of dry mouth, sores and possibly a higher risk of cancer.
